Class 2 - Mrs Hill
Dear Parents / Carers,
Firstly, the Class 2 team would like to say a big welcome to Year 2! All children are now becoming used to the routines and expectations of Year 2 and your children have been settling in brilliantly to Class 2, where we have been doing lots of exciting work already!
Please support your child to complete their homework on time and read frequently. Reading should be recorded in their reading diaries, and you should make sure to discuss your child’s books with them. Your child will need to read their book at least two times before quizzing. Quizzing can be done either at home or at school. If your child wishes to quiz at home, the AR link is
https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/2037900 and your child’s username and password can be found at the front of their reading record. Once logged in, please click on the orange book and this will take you to where you can search for the book.
If you have any trouble logging in, please do not hesitate to speak to us.
Also, at the front of your child’s reading diaries is their ‘Times Tables Rock Star’ username and password. This will help your child with their timetable’s knowledge, especially the 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s learnt in year 2. We will be looking weekly at who is on the leader board!
We have many months of learning; encourage your child to achieve their best. We always emphasise that progress is extremely important and will always praise this over achievement!
House Keeping
- PE days are Monday and Tuesday
- Homework is given out on a Friday and expected to be handed in school the following Thursday. If your child is away on a Friday, they will still be expected to collect and complete their homework. Please make sure your child completes their homework as independently as possible as this allows us to see your child’s progress with what they have learnt in school. Your child will have a weekly maths task, reading task and spelling task.
- If you need to contact me urgently, please do this through the office- they will forward the email to me.
- No pencil cases needed in Year 2, but the children may use their own pencil cases in the afternoons if we are colouring etc.

This Term’s Learning
Our theme this half-term is ‘Animals’. This is one of our science units- Animals including humans. We will be writing non-chronological reports and stories, based on the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. If you have any exciting animal things (books, photos from visits) along with any achievements that your child would like to share, our show and tell is on a Friday afternoon and we would love to be able to discuss and celebrate what they have brought in. Other exciting things we will be learning about this half term include looking at schools in the past in history, digital art by the artist Piet Mondrian, why light is important in different religions and digital photography in computing.
In Maths we will continue to practise arithmetic skills, place value of numbers up to 100, addition and subtraction, multiplying and dividing and shape.
Parent Workshop
On the 29th September from 2:45pm – 3:15pm I am pleased to say we will be offering a parent workshop in year 2. The session will explore the different methods we use in maths to support children’s learning, and offer practical ways you can reinforce these strategies at home—especially when helping with homework. We would love to see you there!
We look forward to working with you. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries or concerns.
Mrs Hill, Mrs Babbs and Miss Belmont 😊

Reading Schemes and phonics
In Year 2, if the children are ready, we use Renaissance Reading to help the children develop their reading skills. The children are assessed periodically to monitor how they are progressing and to make sure they are choosing books that are of appropriate level of difficulty for them.
