Class 5 - Mrs Morgan

Dear Parents,
I hope all the children had a wonderful time over the Easter holidays and have come back to school rested and ready for more learning, without feeling ill from eating too much chocolate. Last term they were really engaged with the learning and we enjoyed showing off their learning during the open evening.
Please continue to support your child to complete their homework on time. This term, it continues to be completed online at maths.co.uk and spag.com - the children have their log ins in their reading diaries. Homework will be set every Friday and I expect it to be completed by Thursday. This term I will be checking that they are completing it regularly, and asking children why it hasn’t been completed if several pieces are missing.
It is also very important to carry on encouraging your children to read frequently. I understand that older children may not want to hear being read but you can still discuss their books with them. I know not every child has a love for reading so encourage them to read magazines, newspapers, poetry and information texts even if this is on the computer. Can I please ask that you remind the children to write all their reading in their reading diaries to help us keep track of those who are reading and those who aren’t, as it means we can support this more in class.
This Term’s Learning
Our main theme is ‘The Vikings’. We will be comparing life for the Vikings with life for the Anglo-Saxons. We will also be looking at why both eras ended at the same time. We will be writing biographies on famous people from these eras and looking at poetry. In R.E, we will look at philosophy and how this links to different religions. Our Science does not link to our theme but will we be looking at living things and their habitats. In Art, we are studying sculpture and looking at how to use a frame to help build a statue. As a class, we will also be reading the books ‘How to Train a Dragon’ and ‘The Last Wild’.
In Maths, we will continually practise arithmetic skills, whilst also focusing on shape and relooking at decimals.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.
Kind regards,
The Year 5 Team

Reading Scheme
In KS2 we use Renaissance Reading to help the children develop their reading skills. The children are assessed periodically to monitor how they are progressing and to make sure they are choosing books that are of appropriate level of difficulty for them.
